The union holds an apprenticeship recruitment approximately every 5 years. A candidate must obtain an application during a designated time frame which are handed out on a first come, first serve basis. Once the application is completed and submitted, applicants are given an interview date. The highest scoring interviewees will then be offered an opportunity to take a NYS Aptitude Test, with the top scoring individuals being placed on an official NYS DOL rank list. The Board of Trustees determines the need for apprentices each year and calls applicants in rank list order.
The open recruitment application dates will be posted on the New York State Department of Labor’s website under “Jobs and Careers -> Apprenticeships -> View Recruitments.”
The answer to this depends on the agency used. If you took the UA CFC examination, call Margarita at (718) 885-8825, or email mvelez@steamny.com to get a digital copy or a laminated copy of your card sent by mail. The UA no longer issues plastic cards for this certification and the new printed cards display the passed types but no longer display the word “Universal” on them. If your card was issued by an agency other than the UA, you will need to contact that agency directly to find out how to replace your lost card.
